Check out the sadly-inactive, but packed with goodness, blog Big Orange Landmarks, a project dedicated to visiting each one of the city's 900+ Historic-Cultural monuments, which range from gorgeous homes to paving stones, stands of trees to lost clubs and beyond. With detailed histories, then-and-now photo sets and a sometimes snarky voice, Floyd B. Bariscale's blog is a must for lovers of lost L.A.

What have you found on the web that enhances your appreciation of this city?
For those of us who enjoy a break from the city now and then...
Drive an hour north, take a short hike, and you could be picnicking with bears. It's incredible to discover some of these remarkably beautiful, isolated areas so close to our megalopolis. Or, on a clear day, hike up the side of a mountain for wonderful views of the city we love.

Thanks for the tip re bigorangelandmarks.blogspot. Some eye-catching architecture; printed out a shot of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, to use as a model in my current cityscape drawing.
