The Cacophony Society – Zone Show: You May Already be a Member

THE CACOPHONY SOCIETY – ZONE SHOW  is Grand Central Art Center’s retrospective look at the Cacophony Society, a national collective of guerrilla artists, dada pranksters, and various eccentrics pursuing “experiences beyond the mainstream.” Dedicated to activities mocking societal expectations, sacred cows, and good taste, The Cacophony Society evolved from the San Francisco Suicide Club and its members were chief organizers of the Burning Man Festival in Northern Nevada. The Society’s pranking served as inspiration for the activities of Project Mayhem in Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club. The exhibition transforms the museum's main gallery into a wildly immersive environment filled with photos, graphics, video, props, costumes, and original art from Society events. Exhibition runs through April 15. FREE!

BLOCK PARTY: The Feburary 4th opening will be celebrated with a block party featuring carnivalesque music and performance from artists associated with the Society, art cars, competing protestors, dangerous stunts, an on-call ambulance, and other surprises. That is if the Department of Homeland Security doesn't shut us down!

Check http://intothezonemovie.com for updates and complete lineup TBA.  FREE!

Crime Writer's Homicide School December 6-8 (3-day event)

“Your presentation was the highlight of the California Crime Writers Conference.” - Tyler Dilts, Author of "A King of Infinite Space" and the forthcoming "The Pain Scale"

•“Yours was one of the most meaningful workshops I've ever attended. Keep up the good work.” - Dr. Bernie DePaolis

“Top 3 Reasons I Recommend THE WRITERS HOMICIDE SCHOOL taught by SGT. DEREK PACIFICO

#1. Sgt. Pacifico is a truly talented speaker and a gifted teacher. Sure, you can sit at home and read about police procedure and investigation, but nothing compares to seeing and hearing the actual detailsofamurdercasefirst-hand. I had to cover my eyes for some of the photos, but otherwise, perfect!

#2. During the two-day seminar, we were able to ask questions and discuss issues with a veteran homicide investigator, and there just aren't many opportunities to do that.

To spend this much time with police detectives, I would've had to commit a felony and get arrested.

#3. I learned that ‘Decomp Smoothie’ is not a delicious, vitamin- enriched protein drink at Jamba Juice. It's something else.” - Carol Rotundo

The CRIME WRITER’S HOMICIDE SCHOOL brings you real details from actual homicides. In this dynamic, three-day lecture series, you'll learn what happens in a murder investigation from the moment police are called all the way to the end with police interrogation techniques. You will know how the cops get confessions without the rubber hose and hot lights. You’ll learn about response procedures, evidence collection, autopsy protocols and much more, taught by an experienced homicide detective.

And for authors, it's the heart of mystery. Whether you write page-turners; thrillers; classic private eye novels ; or cozies with kitty cats and cookies, a dead body and a cop will show up in your story sooner or later.

Bring life to your characters and plots with authentic procedures and crime scene details you can only learn from someone who's been there for hundreds of murder cases and thousands of interviews and interrogations.

Your Speaker: Sergeant Derek Pacifico

•21 year veteran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department

•6 years in the Homicide Bureau

•Hundreds of murder investigations

•Thousands of interrogations

•Public speaker and law enforcement instructor since 1995

•Private training consultant since 2005

Repurposed Circus Kickstarter project deadline

The project is coming due... please check it out on Kickstarter and share the link so we can go to Circus City!

This is Laura Brody's and Heidi Dakter's project, to be held at the Summerset Festival of the Arts in Baraboo, WI.

(If you haven’t heard about Kickstarter, really you want to. It’s a fabulous way to get project funding. Each donation level has great prizes attached, if the project doesn’t come through no money goes out, and it’s just an inspiring and fun way to get your information out into the world.)

The project is a Re-purposed Circus in Baraboo, WI (Circus City, USA)- It’s the birthplace of the American circus and former home of the Ringling Brothers, now home to Circus World Museum. LAVA member Laura Brody and Heidi Dakter want to create a circus parade by live draping the local ringmaster and clowns from Circus World and the people of the town in old circus materials and making them into the parade. They've got workshops planned for creating memory boxes out of old memorabilia (Heidi) and making your own garments from old materials (Laura) and gallery shows from great local sources- the old circus costumes of Circus World and from American Players Theater, plus the whimsical metal creatures of Dr. Evermor and his Forevertron.

The Kickstarter project deadline is Sunday, June 5th at 6:46 PST.

Please come and see the project on Kickstarter, share the link and be inspired to fund your own dreams! Now, Laura Brody never claimed to be a filmmaker, but the stop motion film was fun (though slow) to make. She's filled with admiration for the makers of South Park now...

The Great Million Dollar Ghost Hunt

Update: It is to our extreme displeasure to announce that the Million Dollar Ghost Hunt has been canceled. Unforseen and unfortunate circumstances have materialized upon the path of the ghost hunter and will not vanish into thin air as we had hoped.  We would like to earnestly thank you for your support of this event and your enthusiasm for paranormal experimentation.  Please accept our most sincere apologies for these changes. With love, GHOULA.

But you can still join us at the Sunday Salon, for an afternoon of free, spooky entertainments.

The Los Angeles Visionaries Association (LAVA) presents:

THE GREAT MILLION DOLLAR GHOST HUNT

A special event hosted by GHOULA (Ghost Hunters of Urban Los Angeles) and LAVA Visionary Nick Matonak immediately following the monthly Sunday Salon at Clifton's Cafeteria. To reserve, click this link (reservations are good for one person only-- each person in a group must sign up individually).

Calling all ghost hunters, paranormal investigators, psychics, sensitives, and those interested in getting a glimpse of the "other side." Whether you are acting alone, or in a team, GHOULA wants you! Whether you are a seasoned pro or this is your first ghost hunt, GHOULA wants you!

If you are up for the challenge, come be a part of the biggest "ecto-experiment" ever attempted in Los Angeles (and possibly the world).

On Halloween (Oct. 31st) @ 2:30pm, the doors to the historic, haunted Million Dollar Theater will open, and everyone will have exactly two and a half hours (til 5:00pm), to document anything "out of the ordinary." From electro-magnetic anomalies to shivers down your spine, if you feel it, witness it, or record it, we want to hear about it, and we want to know exactly where it happened. So bring your EMF meters, your EVP recorders, your cameras, or just yourself.

Each participant will receive their own individual map, which will be used to record the location of any "activity." Please keep your info confidential until after the experiment, to discourage copy-cat contamination. The maps will then be returned at the end of the event to GHOULA, at which point the group will give a presentation on previously reported unexplained experiences in the theater. Based on everyone's data, "hot spots" will be determined and posted online with the actual stories associated with this location's ghost(s). Those that have devices that need time to be reviewed (i.e. digital recorders, infra-red video, etc.) will have one week (til Nov. 7) to report any additional "places of interest" to be included before our big reveal at GHOULA's monthly "Spirits with Spirits" mixer. The results will be posted the next day @ http://www.ghoula.org.

For this once in a lifetime opportunity to explore this haunted landmark with others from the paranormal community, a $5.00 donation is requested that will go to help preserve these amazing buildings for future generations to enjoy. This event will also be limited to the first 100 people interested, and the online guest list will be closed at 11am on Sunday, October 31. To reserve, click this link (reservations are good for one person only-- each person in a group must sign up individually). Good luck.
