Welcome to the LAVA dispatch, an invitation to get out into the open air and explore. The real Los Angeles reveals itself slowly, and rewards the ernest seeker.

This week we’d like to remind you of Monday’s LAVA Salon at Musso & Frank, the debut of our new literary dinner series, which will celebrate the writerly culture of Hollywood four times each year. We launch the Salon with a very special guest, the writer Dan Fante, sharing tales from a new memoir featuring his father John Fante’s lively adventures in the back room of Musso & Frank and the adjacent Stanley Rose book shop.

Other upcoming LAVA events include an historic theater tour of the El Capitan, literary bus tours honoring Charles Bukowski and James M. Cain, and an evening of cacophonous, controversial revelry way down Santa Ana way. Read all about it in the OC Weekly:
