BIZARRE NOIR : LENNY LESSER @ HOTEL DE VILLE

The photographic art of Lenny Lesser captures the mystique and irony of Los Angeles cityscapes and urban architecture, transforming the grit and grime into an unseen textured beauty. The neurotically precise eye of Lesser offers compositions of such exquisite perspective, that even the most jaded Angeleno will view the most familiar of structures as if they are seeing them for the first time.

FAREWELL DEAR FRIENDS, I WILL FOREVER REMEMBER YOU… : GEORGE BARKER @ JAKE VINTAGE

This body of work is part of an ongoing series which touches upon the idea of memory, focusing on that which is lost. Ghostly images intersecting one another creating false negatives (deleting information) and false positives (creating recalled information) inhabit the human conscious. Our memory and how we choose to recall the colleagues of information occupying the subconscious haunt us like ghosts whom in their own confusion, have not realized that they are the soles of the dead and forgotten. Here, portraits embrace and morph into one another, suggesting a thought process within the subconscious when one is exploring a long forgotten moment. The installation consists of nine 8” x 10” digital prints and seven light boxes containing the photographic negatives of each print.

INAUGURAL EXHIBITION: JOHN MILLS @ WEEKEND GALLERY

In his work, Mr. Mills explores territories of signification through paint, utilizing frenetic gestures, hieroglyphic-like mark making and anemic application of the medium to analogize fissured consciousness. His brush, though painterly, also works as a stuttering pencil referencing language, the history of modern painting and the beginnings of human mark making itself. The result is a makeshift catalogue of signs decontextualized and placed within the aesthetic frame where they appear familiar yet disorienting due to their largely abstract nature. In the midst of this cacophony of marks, as evidenced by his awkward gestures and uneasy use of color, Mr. Mills’ “portraits” achieve a refreshing candidness.

DOUBLE INDEMNITY SCREENING / COURTESY OF ECHO PARK FILMCENTER FILMMOBILE / 9pm @ Dark Horse Tattoo (Outdoors – Seating Limited)

SWEET IMPERFECTIONS : DANIEL LIM @ LA LUZ DE JESUS (8 to 11pm)

Fawn Fruits aka Daniel Hyun Lim relishes the spontaneity of the art and moves things as he goes with colored pencils and acrylics. Rather than forcefully preaching to the viewer with religious imagery and symbolism, Lim brings new life to the genre by producing work that is based on his personal views on religion. The artist is donating 100% of his proceeds from this show to relief efforts in Japan.
