Boxes and accompanying books for sale.

Maynard Hale Lyndon’s design legacy took root in Boston with Design Research, the store that brought modern living to American homes. On the West Coast, he founded an award-winning toy store (Santa Monica, 1967) and directed product development at Forms&Surfaces (Santa Barbara).

On view: a choreography of memory and impression: “Looking Boxes are my layered constructions, wherein I juxtapose images from the thousands of photographs I have taken, (many in Los Angeles) stretching back to 1962. The boxes combine details of places in surprising and serendipitous scenes. Each is one-of-a-kind. There are no duplicates.” Custom boxes on special order, with the collector’s own photographs.

The Stendahl Galleries celebrates one hundred years of continuous operation and is a proud participant in Pacific Standard Time.

You are cordially invited to an Open House at the historic home/gallery of LAVA Visionary April Dammann and her husband Ron Dammann, president of Stendahl Galleries, a participating gallery in Pacific Standard Time.

April will lead informal gallery tours and speak about her new book, Exhibitionist: Earl Stendahl, Art Dealer as Impresario, which chronicles the life and times of her husband’s grandfather, a pioneering art dealer in Los Angeles. Exhibitionist made book critic David Kipen’s top ten list of “Best Books” published in California in 2011.

Earl Stendahl (1888-1966) who was my husband’s grandfather, was a true visionary. He championed the unknown California Impressionist painters of the 1910s-1930s and almost single-handedly introduced Modern and Pre-Columbian art to the West Coast. My husband is the President of Stendahl Galleries in Los Angeles, which is one hundred years old this year.

I am an organizer for a fundraising/friend-raising event to benefit Hedgebrook – the writers colony for women writers located on Whidbey Island, Puget Sound, Washington. I have been a writing resident at Hedgebrook three times; these quiet, inspiring stays transformed my writing life, and the Southern California Leadership Council hopes to bring money and new support to the organization.

Stendahl Galleries of Art is one of the participating cultural institutions in The Getty Research Institute’s Pacific Standard Time collaboration, now unfolding throughout Southern California.
