Clayton Library and Museum, in association with the Watts Towers Arts Center, will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Watts Riots with a variety of programs in August. Here is an opportunity to revisit the uprising and learn from its aftermath as America in 2015 continues to struggle with the prevalence of African American victims of police brutality, demands for civil rights and equal justice, and institutional racism. August 15, 2015 2 PM Film Screening: “More Than A Riot: The Joyce Ann Gaines Story” Film Screening and panel discussion with the filmmakers and Ms. Gaines, led by King Carter, MCLM Board Member Reception will follow. Videographer will be on site to collect visitor’s recollections of or reflections on the Watts Riots in 1965. Free.

  2. Enjoy a screening of private home movies taken by African Americans, including black cowboys, parades and footage of home movies from the vault of 20s aviatrix and entertainer Marie Coker Dickinson.
  3.  Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the Sixties in the “Audio Assault: Sounds of Black Power” exhibit currently on view at the museum.

The evening will kick off with a one-of-a-kind public art tour featuring artists whose work is currently displayed at the Civic Center, allowing participants to develop a more engaged and nuanced understanding of the civic art across the site’s lush park landscape. Immediately following the tour, award-winning rock, jazz, and experimental musicians Don Preston and Andrea Centazzo will enliven the Center’s amphitheater stage with live music, as a performance by Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre dancers complement the musicians’ unique, layered sounds.  

Public + Art: Three Ducks in a Row will conclude with a Curbside Conversation panel, providing a space for dialogue between artists and community members and cultivating enhanced consciousness of, and appreciation, for art in the public realm. 

The public art tour departs from the East Los Angeles Library lobby at 7pm, and the following performances and Curbside Conversation will take place at 8pm at the Civic Center’s amphitheater stage. For more information and to RSVP for the event, visit www.heididuckler.org.

They are both involved with Hedgbrook’s Southern California Alumnae Council, which will be hosting a one-day retreat designed to give writers the space and time to just write in an unstructured, quiet environment on Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the old Doheny mansion near USC in Los Angeles.

One-Day Writers’ Retreat at  Downtown LA campus of Mount Saint Mary’s College in Los Angeles

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4, 2013
9AM – 5:30PM

Turn off your clocks, schedules, and expectations. This is a day to nurture body and soul, commune with your muse, and above all write. Women writers of all experience levels and interests are warmly welcomed.

Participants may join writing circles to inspire imagination and hone craft, write quietly in community with others, wander to the “farmhouse table” for talk about writing and group feedback, or simply sit under a tree and dream. In the afternoon, industry professionals and Hedgebrook alumnae will be available for one-on-one mentoring. Feedback on work will always be given with the utmost respect for the writer’s vision. Participants should note, however, that the Retreat is a day for rejuvenation, not for detailed manuscript review.

Enjoy a day inspired by Hedgebrook!

However, a subpeona to appear before the McCarren Committee in 1949 changed her life forever.  “Red Hope: The Blacklisting of Hope Foye” will be screened at the Mayme Clayton Library and Museum in Culver City. The film’s subject, Hope Foye, will be at the screening to discuss her life and career.

This national group holds its annual Robert Benchley Awards dinner in a new city each year. This year’s gathering is in Los Angeles, home to Mr. Benchley and Mrs. Dorothy Parker from the thirties through the fifties. This year the Society will gather for various activities the weekend of October 12th, including an Awards dinner hosted by “LAUGH IN” star, Arte  Johnson, at a private club in Santa Monica on Saturday, October 13th.  Evening dress or 20s-30s attire required at the Awards dinner. Must purchase ticket in advance.

Designed as an artistic journey through the environs of the hospital property, the performance will guide the audience through scenes motivated by the preserved and reinvigorated spaces of the Barlow facility, the history of the hospital, and specific patients’ stories to recovery. Inspired by the individuals whose lives have been changed as a result of their time at Barlow, HDDT will highlight the hospital’s past, while celebrating its future through captivating live performance.
