Join us for a walk around Temple and Broadway to the sites of the historic jails of old Los Angeles. You’ll learn about the places where criminals were housed, judged and sometimes autopsied, from the earliest Yankee-era adobe cells to the grand 1924 Hall of Justice (“HOJ“). The tour reveals a giant nexus of law enforcement, encompassing U.S. Attorneys, District Attorneys, the Office of the Sheriff, the county’s central jail, County Supervisors, the Office of Coroner, and more. The history of these lost buildings will be punctuated with historic accounts of mayhem, lynchings, and other sordid tales of woe. We’ll also discuss the 1990s closure of the HOJ and the long process of its restoration. If the criminal and civic history of Old Los Angeles intrigues, don’t miss this tour.

Please join architectural and Southern California historians Alan Hess and Richard Schave for the second in their series of free architectural site visits and talks, “Pereira in Peril.”

Come explore the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (William L. Pereira, 1965), and learn about the proposed redevelopment of the campus and the inherent threat this represents to the legacy of mid-century architect Pereira, whose corporate and civic work helped define Los Angeles.

We’ll gather at the Mammoth family sculptures (Howard Ball, 1968) at the eastern edge of the La Brea Tar Pits pool, and then walk over to LACMA to get the lay of the land, verbally peeling back subsequent additions and alterations to present the architect’s original vision for the campus.

After touring the campus, you can eat your sack lunch while we wrap up the program with an overview of other Pereira buildings facing imminent threat of demolition and a game plan for the Los Angeles community to advocate for their preservation, and that of other under appreciated architectural landmarks.

This month’s tour will be the first of several tours which focus on the architect, Robert Brown Young, whose career spans the 19th & 20th century, residential and commercial. His work on Broadway is the perfect setting to begin to understand Young and his iconic structures.

Our goal with these tours is to explore the history of the built environment on Broadway, while seeking to understand the scope of the work of Strategy One, Phase One of the Broadway Streetscape Master Plan and the “Road Diet,” which has recently begun.
